Some Lesser Known Facts About Sowcar Janaki

• Sowcar Janaki was born and raised in Rajahmundry, East Godavari district, Madras Presidency, British India (now in Andhra Pradesh, India).

• She was the elder sister of her parents. Her younger sister, Krishna Kumari was also a well-known actress of South India cinema.

• Janaki was married at the age of 16, much before she entered the film industry.

• After her marriage she continued her studies and reportedly appeared for matriculation examination, while she was pregnant with her first child.

• Before entering film industry, she worked as a radio artist at All India Radio in Madras.

• When she was 18 years old, she entered films and made her debut with a Telugu film, Shavukaru in 1950.

• The success and popularity of her debut film gave her moniker ‘Sowcar.’

• In 1954, Sowcar Janaki entered Kannada cinema with the film Devakannika.

• In 1959, Janaki appeared in Kannada film, Mahishasura Mardini, one of the early Kannada films that reached audiences beyond Karnataka.

• Along with her successful film career, Janaki continued to take parts in theatre plays. She performed in more than 300 stage shows by 1960.

• From 1960s to 1970s, she became known for portraying emotional and serious roles; however, her image changed dramatically when K. Balachander gave her more complex roles.

• Her collaboration with K. Balachander became an important turning point. Balachander first worked with her through theatre rather than film.

• After 1970s, instead of trying to remain only a leading role, Janaki successfully moved into character roles.

• In 1991, Janaki made her television debut through the Tamil Doordarshan serial Oorarindia Rahasyam.

• In 1990s, instead of retiring completely from acting, she continued to accept selected films and television roles.

• In 2000, she received the Akkieni Nagaeswara Rao Lifetime Achievement Award, for her long contribution to South Indian cinema.

• Even in later 80s, she continued to receive honours, including the Streeratna Award, the Wonder Women Award for Evergreen Entertainer of Indian Cinema, and the Puratchi Thalaivi Dr. J. Jayalalitha Special Kalaimamani Award.

• In 2023, she appeared in the film Anni Manchi Sakunamule, directed by Nandini Reddy. It became her final film appearance after a career lasting more than seven decades.

• In her entertainment career, Sowcar Janaki participated in more than 3,000 stage plays.

• In 2020, she was starred in her 400th film titled, Biskoth.
