Some Lesser Known Facts About Sujeet Kalkal

• As a child, Sujeet Kalkal started early training in wrestling at his village.

• He was not trained under a formal coach. He was trained at an old village akhada.

• In his early years, he often lost at district and state competitions.

• His father, Dayanand Kalkal, encouraged him to continue wrestling. Dayanand had competed at the national level and wanted his son to follow the same path.

• During his school days, he was a bright student in his studies and tried to balance school with wrestling.

• He continued training in his village until 2020.

• In 2021, Sujeet Kalkal moved to Sonipat, Haryana, where he improved his technique and made his wrestling more mature.

• In 2022, he was selected to the Under-20 team of India and competed at the U20 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. He lost in the semi-final but won the bronze medal in the 65 kg category. It was his first medal at an international competition.

• That same year, he won a gold medal at the U20 Asian Championships in Manama, Bahrain.

• After that, Sujeet Kalkal won a gold medal at the U23 Asian Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

• He then participated at a UWW Ranking Series event in Tunis, Tunisia, and won a gold medal. This made him three major international gold medals in a short period.

• In 2024, Sujeet Kalkal competed in the Senior National Championship in Jaipur in the 65 kg category and won.

• After that, he defeated wrestlers in the national trials of seniors and became the main challenger of India in the category.

• He was one of India’s wrestlers trying to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

• In April 2024, his Olympic qualification campaign suffered a major setback when he and wrestler Deepak Punia were travelling through Dubai to reach the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. There, severe flooding in Dubai disrupted their journey.

• After that, when they reached Bishkek, the weigh-in had already started, so they did not complete the required weigh-in on time, Then, they were not allowed to compete.

• That same year, Sujeet Kalkal competed in the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania, and won a bronze medal, competing in the 70 kg category.

• In 2025, Sujeet Kalkal won his second U23 Asian Championship gold medal in the 65 kg category in Vung Tau, Vietnam. He dominated the competition and won all the five matches.

• He then competed at the UWW Ranking Series in Budapest, Hungary. He won the gold medal after beating several experienced international wrestlers.

• He defeated Islam Dudaev of Albania, a Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, Vazgen Tevanyan of Armenia, and Ali Rahimzadeh of Azerbaijan.

• He scored 33 points while giving away only two points in four matches.

• In October 2025, Sujeet Kalkal competed at the U23 World Wrestling Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, and won a gold medal in the men’s 65 kg freestyle category.

• During these tournaments, he defeated Fiodor Ceavdari of Moldova by 12-2 points and Dominik Jakub of Poland by 11-0 points. In the quarter-final, he beat Bashir Magomedov by 4-2 points.

• In the semi-final, he faced Yuto Nishiuchi of Japan. He won the match by 3-2 points.

• In the final, he faced Umidjon Jalolov of Uzbekistan. He dominated the match and won by 10-0 points in four minutes and 54 seconds. This gave him his first world title.
