• In 1990, he participated in the Ram Janmbhoomi Movement led by BJP leader L. K. Advani.

• Ajay Tamta began his political career by contesting the district panchayat elections. In 1996, he was elected as a district panchayat member. He was also appointed as the vice president of the panchayat.

• He contested as an independent candidate in the 2002 Assembly elections from the Someshwar constituency in Uttarakhand but lost.

• Ajay Tamta contested the 2007 Assembly elections on the ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected as a Member of the Dehradun Legislative Assembly.

• He served as a Minister of State in the Uttarakhand Government from 2007 to 2008. He then served as a Cabinet Minister from 2008 to 2009.

• Ajay Tamta served as a Member of the Standing Committee on Human Resource Development and a Member of the Consultative Committee in the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation from 1 September 2014 to 5 July 2016.

• He served as the Union Minister of State for Textiles from 5 July 2016 to 25 May 2019 during the first Modi administration.

• In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Ajay Tamta was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Almora constituency in Uttarakhand.
