Anu HasanSome Lesser Known Facts About Anu Hasan

  • Anu Hasan belongs to a family of actors and filmmakers in Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
  • Anu never aspired to become an engineer; however, during a visit to her brother’s engineering college,  she saw the basketball field and was impressed by it as she loved playing basketball. She later decided to enrol in the same university.
  • In an interview, she revealed that during the first semester of college, she did not attend classes at all as it was not compulsory and only took part in extracurricular activities including drama club, acting club, and Squash.
  • During the time of her final exams, she realised that she had made a mistake and said that it was the most important learning lesson of her life.  She said,

    Since I’d got good ranks in school without much effort, I thought I could do the same in college too. But, when it came to the finals, I realized that I had to do really well just to pass which was a big blow to an 18-year old who was a topper all along. It was a mess that I had created, handle it. And, that actually shaped me!”

  • After completing her formal education, Anu began working for an organisation known as Thermax in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • While working at Thermax, she got the chance to enter the Tamil film Industry.
  • According to Anu, she was approached by Tamil filmmaker Suhasini Maniratnam to cast her in a film; however, Anu was hesitant to do it but later Suhasini was able to make her agree to act in the film.
  • She received several accolades for her performance in her Tamil debut film ‘Indira’ (1995). After the film was a success, Anu was approached by many famous filmmakers in the South Indian Film Industry.
  • After Indira, she came back to Pune where she met her first husband Vikas, and soon after meeting Vikas, they got married.
  • In an interview, Anu talked about her married life with Vikas and revealed that after 6 months into the marriage, she realised that they were not compatible with each other. However, she did not want to just give up on her marriage and decided to give it a chance and stayed with her first husband for 10 years.
  • During the 10 years of her marriage, Anu started a marketing company named Shogun Marketing Private Limited in Calcutta along with Vikas. The company had more than 150 employees but after the divorce, Anu left the company without claiming anything.
  • In 2001, she appeared in the bilingual film Aalavandhan (2001) in which she played the role of Nandu’s and Vijay’s (played by her real-life uncle Kamal Haasan) mother. The film was made in Hindi and Tamil languages. .

  • Later, she moved back to Tamil Nadu and made a comeback with the Tamil film Run (2002). In the film, she played the role of Shiva’s (played by R. Madhavan) sister.

  • In 2005, Anu started a 100 per cent juice shop named Squash’d Smoothies & Juices in Madras, India.
  • In March 2006, she began hosting her chat TV show named ‘Koffee with Anu,’ which aired on Star Vijay.

  • In 2006, she started working as a columnist for the Indian Magazine Just for Women. She writes a monthly column named Sunny Side Up.
  • In 2012, she appeared in an Arabic short film – Dead Point (2012) in which she played the role of the main lead’s mother.
  • In 2014, she published a book titled Sunny Side Up.

  • In 2017, Hasan made her acting debut in the United Kingdom with the English film “Is This Now.”  In the film, she played the role of Ms. Murray.

  • Anu Hasan has lent her voice as a dubbing artist for many renowned Bollywood actresses who do not know how to speak Tamil for the Tamil dubbed versions of their films including Raveena Tandon for the Bollywood film Aalavandhan (2001) and Preity Zinta in Tamil dubbed version for Bollywood film Dil Se (1998).
