  • Ayush Mhatre lived on the outskirts of Virar and often travelled 80 km one way to train near Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
  • He started playing cricket when he was 6 years old, but decided to become a professional cricketer at the age of 15.

  • He initially trained at the Dilip Vengsarkar Cricket Academy from the age of 5 to 10 years and later at the MIG Academy till 13 years, but they did not charge him anything.
  • His father, Yogesh Mhatre, often took him to training, and once resigned from his banker job to help his son practice harder.

  • His grandfather also took him to the training grounds when his parents were busy working.
  • He changed many schools to practice cricket. He first studied at St. Joseph’s School before changing to the Don Bosco School, where he studied till the 5th.
  • However, he had to attend daily classes there, so he changed to the Rizvi Springfield School, where he was allowed to homeschool.
  • His parents wanted him to have good studies and got him admitted to the IES VN Sule Guruji School after the coach Gopal Koli
  • He scored two double hundreds (202 and 207) in the Giles Shield Competition in 2019. In 2021, he also hit a double hundred for Real Cricket Academy, Dombivli, in a private tournament.
  • In 2024, he wasn’t selected for the NCA camp, following which he became depressed. But his coach, Prashant Shetty, helped him correct his technique nd get selected for Mumbai age-group teams.
  • On 31 December 2024, he scored 181 runs in 117 balls against Nagaland in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, breaking Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of scoring more than 150 runs in List-A Cricket.

  • He represented India in the 2024 Under-19 Asia Cup and was the second-highest run scorer with 176 runs in 5 matches at an average of 44.
  • In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, he went unsold for his base price of Rs 30 lakh.
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK) later selected him as an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad during the 2025 season. They also called Salman Nizar (Kerala) and Urvil Patel (Gujarat) for trials, but chose Mhatre.
  • After selecting him, the CSK head coach, Stephen Fleming, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni claimed that he showed calmness and confidence in his batting ability, which pushed them to select him.

  • In his debut IPL match on 20 April 2025 against the Mumbai Indians (MI), he scored 32 runs in 15 balls. His cousin was in the stands and started crying after watching him play.
  • He also became the 7th youngest player to play in the IPL, at the age of 17 years and 278 days.
  • After his IPL debut, a video went viral showing him during practice as a 6-year-old, in which he said that he wanted to become a batsman.
  • He idolises the Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma and shared a photo with him after playing a Ranji Trophy match together, and later after his IPL debut against MI.

  • He often received messages of support from Suryakumar Yadav and also got many bats as a gift from him.
  • In 2024, after making his Ranji Trophy debut, he signed a contract with SG for cricket equipment and bats.
