- B.R. Chaya grew up in ITI quarters in Bangalore.
- In her childhood, she started her training in music under her grandfather Krishna Rao and grandmother Bhagirathamma. Her grandfather was the harmonium player and music director of the famous GUBBI Drama Company.
- She then started her training in Carnatic music under her gurus Jaganmatha and Vijayavani. She has cleared the senior examination in Carnatic classical music.
- While she was studying in school, she used to participate in various extracurricular activities.
- At the age of 6, she did her training in Bharatanatyam.
- After completing her higher studies, she worked at HMT Watch Company for a few years.
- She has represented Karnataka in the Doordarshan National Competition held in Chennai.
- In March 1979, she participated in the Tabla competition along with Carnatic classical singer Geeta Chandrashekar, Dr. Rajkumar, SPB, and Susheela.
