Some Lesser Known Facts About Baby John

• Baby John was born into the Chakramakkil family at Thaikkad in Manalur, Thrissur.

• Before joining politics, John completed his matriculation and a course in teacher training.

• In 1969, at the age of 17 he became associated with the Left movement.

• In 1971, Baby John joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist). In the same year, he began working as a teacher at PVM Lower Primary School in Blangad, Thaikkad. He continued his teaching career for about two decades while also becoming active in party activities.

• Along with her teaching career, Baby John became active in local party work where he was appointed as the Paluvai branch Secretary and later as secretary of the Thaikkad and Chavakkad local committee.

• In 1975, during the Emergency, Baby John took part in political protests. He was reportedly assaulted by police while attempting to hoist a black flag on Independence Day. He was arrested under the Defence of India Rules.

• From 1975 to 1977, his political activities during the Emergency affected his teaching career. He was suspended from his teaching job for about one-and-a-half years and was also arrested twice. He spent around two-and0a-half months in jail during this period.

• In 1980, when Chavakkad municipality was formed, Baby John was elected as a councillor. Later, he became the municipality’s first standing committee chairman.

• In 1984, Baby John became the Chavakkad area secretary of the CPI (M). He served this position until 1997, making it one of his longest organisational responsibilities in the party.

• In 1986, John became member of the CPI (M) Thrissur district committee.

• In 1988, he was again elected to the Chavakkad municipal council.

• In 1991, after about two decades as a teacher, Baby John took voluntary retirement from government service and became a full-time political worker.

• In 1997, after serving for more than a decade as Chavakkad area secretary, Baby John moved higher in the party and became a member of the CPI (M) Thrissur district secretariat.

• Throughout his political career, Baby John was strongly connected with the trade union movement. He worked with organisations, including beedi workers, fishermen, toddy workers, head-load workers, and other labourers. He also held positions in the Kerala Beedi and Cigar Workers Federations and the Fishermen’s Union.

• In July 2006, Baby John was appointed as CPI (M) Thrissur district secretary. Later he became a member of the party’s State Secretariat.

• In 2011, John contested unsuccessfully in the Kerala Assembly election from Manalur as the CPI(M)/LDF candidate.

• Even after stepping away from mainstream electoral politics, he remained associated with the CPI(M) and its organisational and trade-union activities. He served as Thrissur district secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

• In September 2026, Baby John died in Thrissur, Kerala after a prolonged illness.
