Some Lesser Known Facts About Shiv Ratan Agarwal

Shiv Ratan Agarwal was born into a family rooted in business of snacks in Bikaner, Rajasthan. His grandfather, Gangabhisan ‘Haldiram’ Bhujiawala, was a pioneer in the Indian snack industry. Later his father, Moolchand Agarwal, carried forward the family’s legacy in snacks Business.

Since childhood, Shiv Ratan showed a keen interest in the family business and learnt the art of bhujia-making under his grandfather’s guidance.

Despite his early exposure to the business, he completed his education only up to class 8 and then joined his family’s business.

In the late 1980s, dissatisfied by his family business in Rajasthan, particularly in Bikaner, Shiv Ratan made a bold decision and left Haldiram to create his own venture.

In 1987, Agarwal launched his snack-making business, under Shivdeep Food Products, combining his name, Shiv Ratan and his son’s name, Deepak. Initially he launched snacks focusing on Bikaneri bhujia.

By 1993, Shiv Ratan renamed his venture as Bikaji Foods International. In an interview, Shiv revealed that he picked that name after getting inspiration from Bika Rao, the founder of Bikaner, and adding “Ji” as a mark of respect.

In an interview, Shiv Ratan mentioned that initially he faced many hurdles to achieve large scale snack production at a time. So, to overcame these problems, Agarwal travelled abroad to learn about snack manufacturing technologies.

In 2006 Bikaji collaborated with three groups to expand its operations in Australia and UAE.

In 2008, Shiv Ratan opened BikaJi’s first retail store in Mumbai under the name, Bikaji Food Junxon.

As of December 2023, the company’s market capitalization reached at Rs 13,103 crore.

In 2024, Agarwal was listed on Forbes’ “World’s Billionaires” list, with a net worth of Rs 10,830 crore.

Under his leadership, Bikaji Foods grew into a company with a market capitalisation exceeding Rs 19,000 crore.

As of early 2026, Shiv Ratan Agarwal’s estimated net worth was about Rs 15,279 crore.

On 23 April 2026, Shiv Ratan passed away due to heart attack. Reportedly, he was in Chennai at the time of his death.

Shiv Ratan and his family was in Chennai for his wife’s medical treatment. Reportedly, Agarwal’s wife had recently undergone a heart bypass surgery and had been advised to rest.

Shiv and his family was staying at a hotel in Chennai during his wife’s recovery. In the morning of 23 April 2023 around 7:30 a.m., Agarwal reportedly began feeling unwell. As his condition worsen, his family took him to the nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.

The news of his death was declared by his company, Bikaji Foods to stock exchanges.

Shiv Ratan Agarwal is survived by his wife, son, daughter-in-law and a grandson.
