- Bharat Tiwari was born and raised in district Bhojpur of Bihar.
- He was known for raising public issues faced by poor families, flood victims and displaced communities through social media and by speaking with authorities.
- On 17 June 2026, Bharat was killed in a police encounter in Bihar’s Bhojpur district.
- According to the police, the controversy started on 15 June 2026, when Bharat Tiwari posted several posts on his Facebook handle, where he spoke about starting a “revolutionary war” in the country. He also threatened to kill the SDM of Jagdishpur, Bihar.
- On the same day, Police visited his house twice; however, he was not there. Despite police instructions, he also did not appear before them that day.
- Police officers also claimed that multiple criminal cases were registered against Tiwari; however his family claimed that the cases were only the allegations against him.
- On 17 June 2026, local police and Special Task Force (STF) reached his village and conduct an arrest operation against him.
- During the operation, Bharat started a Facebook live session, which later went viral on social media.
- Police said they repeatedly asked Tiwari to surrender, instead he started firing at the team.
- A viral footage showed that Bharat apparently throwing away his weapon and raising his hands, led many people to believe that he was surrendering. However, police claimed that his surrender was misleading and alleged that he had fired at police personnel during the operation.
- During the exchange of fire, Bharat suffered bullet injuries in his leg. He was taken to Patna Medical College for treatment, where he died while receiving the treatment.
- Tiwari’s encounter came under question after viral video appeared to show him throwing away his waepon before the shooting. However, the video have not been independently verified and the incident raised questions about whether proper procedures were followed.
- After Tiwari’s death, his family accused the police of carrying out a fake encounter. They also alleged that Tiwari was intentinally shot despite he was surrendering by throwing his gun. His family members and locals blcoked the Ara-Buxar four -lane highway by placing Tiwari’s body on the road.
- In an interview, Bharat’s mother revealed that he was demanding the resettlement of flood victims in Jawania village, but neither the Bihar government nor the SDM of the area listened to them and tried to solve the problem. After that, Bharat took up weapons and left the house.
- Police registered multiple three FIRs against Bharat, his father, Khasinath Tiwari, his brother Chandan Tiwari, and against those who blocked the road in protest of the encounter.
- The incident triggered protests and political reactions across Bihar. Bihar police also suspended four policemen including SHO involving in Bharat’s encounter after the questions were raised over the operation.
- On 20 June 2026, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court and a CBI investigation is demanded into the matter.
