Controversies | • Slapping a Bribe-demanding Government Employee: CP Joshi made headlines in November 2022 after a video went viral on the internet in which he was seen slapping a government employee for allegedly demanding a bribe in the Pratapgarh narcotics office. Apparently, the BJP MP slapped the employee on the complaint of some farmers who alleged that he had taken a bribe of Rs. 5000 from them for the issuance of opium licenses. Many farmers and government employees were standing there when Joshi slapped the employee. While some of them appreciated Joshi's behaviour, others accused him of showing arrogance. [5]Zee News • Accused of Glorifying The Practice of Sati: While proposing the motion of thanks to the President’s address in his speech in February 2023, Joshi attracted criticism from the members of the opposition who alleged that he was glorifying the practice of Sati. Sati is historical Hindu practice in which a widow sacrifices herself in the funeral pyre of her deceased husband. During his speech, Joshi talked about Padmavati, the Queen of Mewar, and said, "Rani Padmavati jinhone apne satitva ki raksha ke liye Alauddin Khilji ko kabhi chehra nahin dikhaya.” (Rani Padmavati who never showed her face to Alauddin Khilji to protect her chastity) He further added, "She threw herself into a raging fire along with her 16,000 female consorts. But your government put up obstructions around this place. Our government has now recognised this site.” Later, dismissing the allegations against him, Joshi clarified that he did not make any reference to ‘Sati’ but mentioned that Padmavati performed ‘Jauhar' (self-immolation) to protect her honour. He said that due to weak translation from Hindi, many mixed the word ‘Satitva’ (chastity) with 'Sati.' [6]The Wire |
