Some Lesser Known Facts About Gurpreet Sekhon

• Gurpreet Singh Sekhon was born in village Mudki in district Ferozepur, Punjab.

• He grew up in a financially well-off family that owned agricultural land and brick kilns.

• During his college days, he was trained as a flight attendant. Reportedly, he had completed a course in flight stewardship and had once dreamed of a career in Airforce.

• Police records and media reports linked him with several gangsters and criminal groups.

• His first reported case was under the Arms Act in 2007. Over the years, many criminal cases were registered against him.

• He was also named as an accused in the murder case of gangster Sukhvir Singh, alias Sukha Kahlwan, who was shot dead in 2015 while being taken in a police vehicle.

• In March 2016, Gurpreet Sekhon was arrested in connection with the Sukha Kahlwan case. However, a Kapurthala court later acquitted him and seven other accused in February 2019 because of lack of sufficient evidence.

• The court noted that there were problems with identification of the accused and the evidence failed to match the recovered bullets with the weapons. Therefore, the murder allegation was not treated as a conviction.

• On 27 November 2016, a group of armed men dressed as policemen attacked Nabha Maximum Security Jail in district Patiala, Punjab. They opened fire at the prison guards and helped six prisoners escape. These six prisoners included four gangsters and two Khalistan Liberation Force-linked prisoners.

• On 23 March 2023, the court sentenced him 10 years in jail. He was convicted under many sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act in connection with the jailbreak.

• On 22 November 2023, Gurpreet Sekhon was released from jail. The Punjab and Haryana High Court suspended his conviction.

• As of 2026, his appeal was pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
