In May 2019, the football journalist Chris Williams shared Rakitic's 2012 interview with Spanish website Offside Mag in which he was reportedly seen saying that he respected homosexuals but did not want such people in the locker room. He was criticized for his comments by several people of LGBTQIA+ community but Rakitic later clarified that his words were misrepresented, and he did not have any problem with such people.

  • When he was 16 years old, he gave trials for reputed clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Juventus but he chose to play for FC Basel regularly.
  • Rakitic later played for Switzerland’s Under-17, Under-19, and Under-21 teams but later switched to Croatia national team after he was approached by Croatia national team coach Slaven Bilić.
