- He wrote a thesis titled “Some Strategies for Indian Earth Observation System” in 2000 for his doctorate at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
- Radhakrishnan joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of ISRO in 1971.
- As the director of the VSSC, he led the successful launch of PSLV–XL that launched Chandrayaan-1. He also led the successful launches of several other PSLVs.
- As the Chairman of ISRO, he executed 37 space missions. The Chandrayaan-2 mission was also redefined under his guidance. He also led the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan). The success of GSLV-D5 was also under the directorship of Radhakrishnan at ISRO.
- As the director of NRSA, he contributed to building India’s modern multi-mission ground station at Shadnagar for Earth Observation Satellites.
- He is the Founding Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). Also, he was the first Project Director of India’s Tsunami Early Warning System.
- During 2001-05, he also held the position of Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.
- K Radhakrishnan is a Kathakali dancer. He learnt the dance form from Tripunithura Vijayabhanu and T.V.A. Varier. He is also skilled in Carnatic music which he learned from R. K. Srikantan and Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana.

- At the Koodalmanikyam temple in his hometown, he gave his first stage performance in Carnatic music in 1980.
- K Radhakrishnan published more than 55 publications, including 12 in reputed journals and eight in edited books.
- In 2019, Radhakrishnan showcased his musical skills at Guruvayoor Chembai Music Festival.
- His wife Padmini is affectionately called as Mini. She worked with the State Bank of Travancore from 1980 to 2010.
