- Mendis was introduced to cricket by his father, who is very passionate about the game.
- Mendis first started practicing with both arms in the nets at the age of around 13. He bowled with both arms in a match for the first time in 2014 in an Under-17 match against St Joseph’s College; He took four wickets in the match.
- Mendis made his List A debut on 30 November 2015 against Badureliya Sports Club in the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament.
- Mendis captained Sri Lanka’s U19 side for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
- On 21 August 2018, Mendis made his Twenty20 debut for Colombo against Galle; he took a wicket in the match.
- Mendis made his first-class debut for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club against Chilaw CC in the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament on 30 November 2018.
