- Kamlesh Paswan grew up in a family with a political background.
- His father, Om Prakash Paswan, was elected as MLA from the Maniram assembly constituency in 1989, 1991, and 1993.
- Om Prakash was killed in 1996 while addressing a public function. At that time, Kamlesh Paswan was studying at a college in Gorakhpur, and he was not old enough to contest an election.
- His mother, Subhawati Devi, became the first woman MLA from Bansgaon constituency in Uttar Pradesh on the ticket of Samajwadi Party (SP) in 1996.
- After his father’s assassination, his uncle Chandresh Paswan was elected as MLA from the Maniram constituency on the ticket of the Samajwadi Party.
- Kamlesh Paswan served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Maniram constituency representing the Samajwadi Party from 2002 to 2007.
