Some Lesser Known Facts About Kavya Ajit
- Kavya is an Indian playback singer who is known for her Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu songs. She is also known as a violinist and live performer.
- From her debut song in Rose Guitarinaal in 2013 to a duet with Vineeth Srinivasan in the blockbuster movie Jacobinte Swargarajyam, Kavya has come a long way as a playback singer.
- According to Kavya, her success is a mix of luck, talent, and hard work. In an interview, she said that it was luck that brought her to musician Shahabaz Aman’s attention. Kavya said,
Someone suggested my name to Shahabaz sir as he was in search of a new voice. I guess he liked mine.”
- Since childhood, Kavya was inclined towards music. According to Kavya, her grandmother, Kamala Subrahmaniam, who is a former All India Radio artiste, was the one who encouraged her to sing and taught her the basics of Carnatic Music.
- Kavya considers herself a “trained” singer and not a born one. She says,
It is daily, rigorous sadhana that has helped me reach my dream of becoming a musician.”
- Apart from singing, she also loves to play the violin, and she learned the basics of violin from Albert Vijayan Japheth.
- Kavya left her job at an American multinational company, Cognizant Technolgy Solutions in Chennai, to make her career in music. While talking about this, Kavya says,
I am a software engineer employed in Chennai. Seeing others around me fulfilling their musical ambitions, I too decided to chase mine.”
- Kavya got her first break in 2013 when she was offered the song Engum Nalla Pookkal in the Malayalam film Rose Guitarinaal. Later, she went on to sing many Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu songs. She has also lent her voice in a few Hindi and English songs.
- She got breakthrough with ‘Nee En Kaattaay…’ in Jo and the Boy and ‘Ee Shishirakaalam…’ from Jacobinte Swargarajyam. After this success, Kavya started getting many offers. She says,
I am now invited to various music shows on television and am part of stage music shows. In fact, I have performed with Karthik, Vijay Prakash, and Naresh Iyer to name a few.”
- Kavya has performed at many concerts, violin shows, commercial jingles, and western music vocals. She has shared the stage with renowned artists like Vijay Prakash, A. R. Rahman, Gopi Sundar, Stephan Devassay, and Vineeth Sreenivasan.
- In an interview, she talked about singing in various languages. She said,
Apart from Indian languages, I have attempted songs in English, Spanish and Arabic. When you first attempt to sing in a foreign language, it will obviously be tough. But probably because I have been listening to a lot of Spanish songs and like the feel, I find the language comparatively easier in terms of singing. Cosiendome El Corazan is one of the songs I have learnt, and as I was singing it I felt that Moongil Thottam seemed to fit in. The mood of both songs sounded similar and I thought, why not make a blend?”

I haven’t taken any up as I have just begun a career in music. I don’t want to become distracted. There is so much in music to explore – there’s programming, composing, vocal arrangement…I am happy with where I am right now and intend to enjoy the ride.”
- She has also recorded a cover track with her eight-year-old daughter; it was her baby’s favorite lullaby ‘Omanathinkal Kadivo.’
