- Lalita Kayi is a woman of American origin, who was found chained in the Vasturli forest of Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district in July 2024.
- Lalita was discovered by a shepherd who heard her cries for help and reached the spot where she was tied to a tree with an iron chain. He soon informed the Sindhudurg Police about it.
- While rescuing her, the police recovered various documents from her possession, including a photocopy of her US passport and an Aadhaar card bearing a Tamil Nadu address. The police also recovered some medical prescriptions in her possession.
- The police sent all the documents for verification to ascertain her nationality. Police also contacted the Foreigners Regional Registration office for information related to Kumar.
- After her rescue, she was immediately taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi in Maharashtra’s Konkan region. She was later transferred to a hospital in Oros, Sindhudurg. Eventually, she was shifted to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment.
- According to the police, she could not provide any statement as she suffered severe weakness due to a lack of food for several days. However, she later wrote a note on a piece of paper, which read,
Injection for extreme psychosis which causes severe locked jaw and inability to drink any water. Need intravenous food… 40 days without food in forest – husband tied me to a tree in a forest and said I would die there.”
- Based on her note, the police registered a case against her husband on charges of attempted murder, act endangering life or personal safety of others and wrongful confinement under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
- The doctors who were treating her revealed that Lalita suffered from schizophrenia (psychiatric problems).
- After the initial investigation, the police found that Kumar had been residing in India for the past ten years and her visa had expired.
- Apparently, Lalita came to India in 2014 to learn yoga and meditation. It was while learning yoga that she fell in love with a Tamil man, got married to him and settled in Tamil Nadu, India.
- In 2024, Lalita and her husband had a fall out after which, Lalita moved to Goa, where she resided for a few months.
