| Controversies | No-Mask and Smoking Row: On 4 May 2021, Lim Young-woong was caught on camera indoors without a mask on and was caught smoking in a dressing room during the filming of Mulberry School at the DMC Digital Cube in Seoul. People there later explained that he was simply doing his makeup and was waiting to shoot the film, which explained why he was wearing no mask at that point. It was also added that artists tend to remain unmasked on the shoot but still adhere to a rough guideline concerning COVID-19; that is why some felt that the criticism of the mask was not justified. He was also linked to a case of indoor smoking during a previous concert in Busan and his agency confirmed that it was investigating the case. On 5 May 2021, a netizen claimed that the two incidences had been reported to the local authorities of Seoul and Busan as a potential legal breach. The attention given to the issue then led to LimYoung-woong making an official apology to the controversy. [1]SPOTV NEWS The Use of "Dreungdreung": On 16 June 2024, Lim Young-woong used the word “dreungdreung” during a live broadcast while expressing excitement about meeting fans in the future. The clip reappeared online on 29 June and his use of the word became a matter of concern as some claimed it had a negative connotation against men. Although the term means a loud or agitated noise, in some internet subcultures it can be used to refer to a state of anxiety, and a few male users perceive it as a negative term even though it is not a hate speech. Some internet users criticised him and even called boycott but others claimed that he was likely to have used the word without understanding what it meant. Media reports also helped in clarifying that the word by itself, does not have a definite hateful connotation. [2]Hankyung The Political Silence: On 7 December 2024, Lim Young-woong posted a picture with his dog on Instagram to celebrate its birthday. A netizen questioned him via DM about posting this during a serious political situation. He replied that he is not a politician, which led to online criticism and the nickname “Imwhatyo.” The exchange sparked mixed reactions. Some called him insensitive, while others said he has the right to stay silent on politics. It was also not confirmed if the shared messages were real, and a person alleged to be involved denied sending them. [3]Chosunbiz ![]() |
