Religion/Religious Views | Manny Pacquiao was born a catholic and often displayed his religious beliefs in the boxing ring. He came to the ring wearing rosary, knelt down, and prayed before his fight. Outside of boxing, he was known to be a party animal, gambler, drunkard, and womanizer. While he was on a winning spree in his boxing career, he often felt without any purpose in life and also thought about committing suicide. He once saw a dream in which he saw two angels and paradise. He later read the bible and 'The Purpose Driven Life' book by Rick Warren. In 2011, he converted to Evangelical Protestantism and became a born-again Christian. He later claimed in an interview that Jesus has said in The Bible that everyone needs to be born again to become a true Christian. Many of his family members and friends did not like his conversion. His mother pointed to the rosary in an interview and asked Pacquiao the reason for leaving it. In his later fights, he stopped wearing rosary but continued his ritual of kneeling and praying in the ring. He also raised his hand to the heavens after each fight. |

Controversies | Love Child Rumours In February 2006, a former receptionist at City Square KTV bar in Malate, Manila named Joanna Rose Bacosa, then-24-year-old, came out in public and filed criminal and civil charges against Manny Pacquiao for violating the Republic Act 9262 (law on violence against women and children) and threatening to kidnap her son. She claimed that he often visited the bar to play pool (billiards) where they first met each other. According to her, their affair began on 18 April 2003 and later she became pregnant with his child. Pacquiao was happy with the news. He later gave Bacosa P20,000 for an apartment and another P300,000 as a Christmas gift and for the expenses in the delivery of their love child. On 2 January 2004, she gave birth to their son Eman Bacosa. Pacquiao visited her three weeks after the delivery where they again got physical. She claimed that Pacquiao later stopped visiting her and receiving her calls. Pacquiao confessed that he had a physical relationship with her but he was unsure about being the father of the child as she had another boyfriend while dating him. The case was later dismissed by the court. Her son 'Eman Bacosa' later grew up to become a boxer and has been spotted with Pacquiao on several occasions. [1]The Philippine Star Manny Pacquiao Foundation charged for importing used clothes In 2009, a case was filed against The Manny Pacquiao Foundation after it was found that the foundation was importing used clothes from the US to the Philippines. Such clothes are not classified under 'relief clothes' in the Philippines laws and were impounded by custom officers. Extramarital affair with Krista Ranillo In 2010, Pacquiao was spotted with the Filipino actress, Krista Ranillo, after he appeared on the 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' at the ABC Studios in California. Pacquiao and Ranillo first met during the shooting of the film 'Wapakman' for the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival. His wife, Jinkee, later said while crying that Manny cheated on her with Ranillo and many other women. Manny changed his life in 2011 after converting to Evalengical Protestantism from Catholicism. In a later interview, Jinkee said that her marriage was stronger than ever. Tax fraud allegations In November 2013, the Philippine Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) froze Pacquiao's bank accounts and properties in Philippine for not paying ₱2.2 billion in taxes for earnings on his fights in the United States from 2008 to 2009. Pacquiao later presented documents claiming that he paid the taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the USA. After becoming a senator in April 2017, he tried to settle the case but BIR said that he had to pay taxes in Philippines even if he paid it to IRS. Homophobic Comments In early 2016, Manny Pacquiao created controversy by comparing homosexuals to animals, saying people in same-sex relationships 'are worse than animals.' Several people from LGBTQ community criticized him after which Nike terminated their deal with Pacquiao. He later apologized for his remarks and said that he did not believe in same-sex relationships as a Christian but did not have any bad feelings for those people. Accused of breaching contract Manny Pacquiao signed up with Paradigm Sports in 2020 which manages many fighters such as Conor McGregor and Israel Adesanya. In 2021, the company filed a case against him for breaching contract by signing up with another management. In May 2023, Pacquiao was ordered to pay $5.1 million and $2 million in attorney fees (both with 10 percent annual interest) by the Orange County Superior Court. |
