ControversyArrested for hurting religious sentiments of Hindus
On 1 January 2021, Nalin Yadav was arrested by the Indore police along with the comedian Munawar Faruqui for their show in Indore. He was registered under sections 295-A, 298, 269, 188 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, 1870. Yadav claimed that he performed for five minutes prior to Faruqui at Café Munroe and had no link with the comedian other than that; however, the police in court claimed that Yadav was also an organizer of the show. He was granted a bail after he had spent 57 days in Jail on 26 February

  • Nalin Yadav was born in Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. Due to his parent’s jobs, he spent his earlier years living in different cities including Ambala, Chandigarh, and Taba.

  • He began practising dance since the age of 6 and wanted to become a dancer but he left dancing after five years.
  • At the age of 12, his parents moved back to Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where he pursued his further education.
  • When Nalin turned 14, his father passed away due to a haemorrhage. Due to his father’s death, the financial condition of his family worsened and his mother took up two jobs and was able to earn only Rs. 4000 a month. To help his family financially he began working as a mobile phone repairman in a shop. He earned Rs. 20 daily.
  • As Nalin was a bright student, given his financial status, his school gave him a 100 per cent scholarship; however, he failed in his studies during his ninth grade.
  • After completing his schooling, he aspired to become a journalist but could not pursue it further due to financial restraints.
  • Later, he started working as a daily wage worker at a factory in Indore. At the factory, he worked for 12 hours a day and earned Rs. 180 daily but he soon quit this job.
  • Yadav began working as a server at a wine shop; however, his mother did not want him to work there and left that work after two months.
  • After that, he started working as a salesman for Reliance Communications. He sold mobile sims at Reliance for a year. Later, he began working as a salesman for a real estate company.
  • In 2017, Nalin was inspired by the Indian comedian Zakir Khan after watching his comedy special Haq Se Single and decided to share his breakup story as a comedy; however, there were no open mics in Indore at the time.
  • Later, he began his comedy career at a restaurant named 10 Downing Streets in Indore. He used to work in a factory the entire week and on weekends used to do standup.
  • According to him, his first performance at the restaurant was a disaster “But the crowd was drunk so they loved it.” While working there he met many local comedians and formed a network. He began performing at a poetry open mic club for a political group.
  • Later, he gained fame as a comedian and began performing open mics at various clubs across different cities.

  • In October 2020, his mother passed away due to cancer which led Yadav to take a break from his career.
  • After his bail on 26th February 2021, Nalin Yadav’s career took a big hit. He was refused by many cafes and restaurants.
  • Due to the controversy, he moved to Delhi and began working in film productions.
  • In March 2022, he did a video for the Indian media house The Quint’s YouTube channel. In the video, he talked about the incident and revealed that his career derailed after his arrest and imprisonment. He revealed that he was hospitalized for 2-3 weeks after getting imprisoned because of anxiety and panic attacks.
  • He also said that he was given a title of anti-Nationalist and was asked to move out of his Indore house by the neighbours.
  • In May 2022, he appeared in a Hindi-language film.

  • On 14 May 2022, he did a comedy show in Indore titled Humar Qaid. The show was a humourous take on his experience about staying in jail for 54 days. During the show, he also talked about the incident regarding his arrest.
  • On 27 May 2024, Nalin Yadav shared a post on Instagram. In the post, he shared a video of him and his brother getting beaten up by local goons.
  • In the post, he wrote that it had been 3 years since the incident yet he was facing problems in his life because of it. He also claimed that over the years he had filed many complaints to the police regarding the issue as his brother’s leg was broken by local goons twice in the last two years.
  • He also claimed that although he was the victim, police filed a case against him.
