  • Aakash Gupta is a well-known Indian stand-up comedian and the co-winner of Comicstaan season-2. He is well-trained in performance arts and has aced the genre of sketch comedy. He started his career with theatre and improvisational comedy and ended up being a full-time stand-up comedian. Aakash uses his physicality and excellent acting skills during his on-stage acts.

Some people like telling jokes. I like to act them out.”

  • Aakash used to do theatre before entering the comedy business. He grew an interest in theatre in his college days and also performed a play based on ‘Shaheed Bhagat Singh.’ He was also a part of Natuve (नटूए) – The Theatre Society of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.

  • After working with an improv community group for a year, he started visiting open mics. Soon, he registered himself for a couple of short performances. Stand-up comedy was a new genre for him. In an interview, he said,

So I have to write my own material for those, which I was not used to, because improv is more of a team thing. There is no writing in it. So it was a new thing for me. I tried it, I liked it, and started doing it.

  • In 2013, Aakash started working as an auditor in KPMG Gurgaon, Haryana. He was an auditor during the day, and a comedian by night; performing at open mics around Delhi.
  • While trying his hand at stand-up comedy, he was supplementing his income with multiple things. Stand-ups were a part-time thing for him. It was after 2-3 years that Aakash pursued comedy professionally. He says,

I was interning at a radio station, doing plays, shooting documentaries… I took a lot of time before professionally getting into comedy…..It was only after two to three years that I started professional comedy. Otherwise, it was a part-time thing for me.

  • Aakash took one step at a time. When open mics began to flow smoothly, he earned paid spots in various shows and also started hosting shows.
  • On 27 April 2017, Aakash uploaded his first comedy sketch titled ‘Manhoos Man’ on his YouTube channel.

  • His career highlight would be the first stand-up comedy video that he uploaded on his channel on 12 June 2017, after which he started getting shows to perform stand-ups. With success coming his way, he decided to quit acting and pursued comedy full-time. Although he chose comedy over theatre, he regrets it. In an interview, he said,

People started buying my tickets. That was the time I had to leave everything else, which I regret. I miss doing theatre. Acting has been my first love, and the second is stand-up.

  • Thereafter, he continued his journey as a comedian and kept uploading his comedy gigs on his YouTube channel. The other stand-ups that he uploaded were, ‘Relationships, Clubbing & Cocktails,’ and ‘Delhi Metro.’

  • Although, he was consistently a top scorer throughout the show, the finale was a different ball game. The previous scores of the contestants didn’t matter, and final judgement was purely based on their performance on the finale show.
