Some Lesser Known Facts About Nallu Indrasena Reddy

  • Nallu Indrasena Reddy is an Indian politician and a social worker, who was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has held the post of a Member of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly (MLA) three times. He came to the limelight after he took charge of the office of the Governor of Tripura in October 2023.
  • During his school days, Reddy enrolled as a pracharak in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
  • From 1968 to 1969, he worked in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Owing to his superior managerial and organisational skills, Reddy was appointed the president of ABVP in Andhra Pradesh.
  • During his time with the ABVP, he faced a serious assault by a Radical Students Union (RSU) member, which was an affiliate of the CPI-M. He was stabbed in the stomach but survived the attack.
  • He became an active participant in the Jayaprakash Narayan movement and contributed significantly to various nationwide protests organized as part of the movement in 1977. While giving an interview, Reddy spoke to the media about his early political career and said,

I was in ABVP from 1968, 69 and before that I was in RSS as a student. After the imposition of emergency in 1975, I was arrested under the Mesa and went to jail. I became a participant in the movement started by Loknaik Jayaprakash in 1977. I acted as the state president of the student wing of the Janata Party.”

  • While actively participating in the movement, Reddy faced jail time for a year under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). He was jailed when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was in power, and she declared a nationwide state of emergency that persisted from 1975 to 1977.
  • He joined the BJP in 1980 as a karyakarta (activist). He, however, went on to get various important posts in the party after he helped the party in increasing its presence in the southern parts of India.
  • In the 1985 Andhra Pradesh state assembly elections, Reddy emerged victorious over Nadendla Bhaskara Rao, the then Chief Minister of the state, by winning 17,791 votes more than him.
  • According to him, after winning the elections in 1985, the first request that he raised in the legislative assembly was to pass a law that made disclosure of assets and properties owned by an MLA mandatory before the elections. In an interview, he talked about it and said,

After winning in 1985, the first question I put in the House on the first day after moving into the new Assembly building was to ask the ministers to take steps to declare their assets to the public.”

  • In 2002, while returning from a political rally, Nallu Indrasena Reddy’s car was attacked by an unidentified group. The BJP claimed that the assault was linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba, which was allegedly supported by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Later, Indrasena accused the police of downplaying the incident to dismiss the claims.
  • He faced defeat by Suravaram Sudhakar, a Communist Party of India (CPI) member, in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Sudhakar managed to secure 56,151 votes more than Reddy in the elections.
