Some Lesser Known Facts About Dr Naresh Trehan

• Naresh Trehan’s parents had to shift their medical practice from Lyallpur (now Faisalabad in Punjab, Pakistan), at the time of partition, to a three-room place in Connaught Place, Delhi, of which two rooms were used as a clinic.

• He was motivated to choose medicine as his career when he saw how his parents helped the many patients who visited them.

• His parents initially did not support his career choice as they knew about the hardships involved in this career.

• During his school days, he was interested in sports, particularly cricket and hockey, and was part of the Delhi State team for these sports. According to him, the sports training helped him build his stamina which is much needed for a cardiac surgeon.

• He is a natural left-hander who was forced to use his right hand by his Hindi teacher making him ambidextrous (the ability to use both hands efficiently) which aided his medical career.

• As a child, he liked to create new things with the Meccano set that he got as a birthday gift from his father. He later developed his creativity skills further by doing aero-modelling.

• He joined Hindu College in 1963 before joining King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, for his medical studies.

• He completed his internship at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

• He cleared the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) exam and left for training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, USA.

• He chose cardiac surgery to specialise from the options (the other was neurosurgery), as it was more result-oriented.

• He was trained under the world-famous cardiac surgeon and renowned teacher, Dr Frank Spencer.

• He was trained at Bellevue Hospital, New York, for seven years till 1977 and was one of the top 2 heart surgeons out of the 32 residents at the end of the training.

• His first surgery was in 1976 which lasted for four hours on a 55-year-old man.

• After his training, he became the faculty of the New York University, on the advice of his guru Dr Frank Spencer.

• In 1981, he founded the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC) project in New Delhi, in collaboration with H. Nanda. Its main goals were to provide better treatment, better training for doctors, and pioneering new research focused on Indian patients.

• Dr Naresh returned to India in 1988, once EHIRC was established and functioning. He was the executive director and chief cardiovascular surgeon of the Institute for 20 years.

• He was appointed personal surgeon to the President of India in 1991.

• He was the President of the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (ISMICS) in Minneapolis, USA from 2004 to 2005.

• After Fortis acquired Escorts, he joined Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, as the Senior Consultant of cardiovascular surgery in 2007.

• In 2009, he and Sunil Sachdeva founded Global Health Limited, commercially known as Medanta – The Medicity, a 43-acre, 1250-bed, multi-super speciality, medical and nursing school facility in Gurgaon, Haryana.

• Dr Naresh Trehan conceptualised Medanta as the ‘Cleveland or Harvard clinic of the East’. It focuses on various types of research uniting the modern and the traditional medicine. The name itself is a fusion of the West and the East.

• Medanta has expanded its hospital network from New Delhi to Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Sri Ganganagar (Rajasthan), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), and Patna (Bihar).

• As of April 2024, he has done over 48000 successful open heart surgeries.

• As of April 2024, he has over 350 scientific publications.

• He is a fitness enthusiast who diligently follows a morning exercise regime and does yoga.
