Some Lesser Known Facts About Neehar Sachdeva

  • Neehar Sachdeva was diagnosed with alopecia, a condition causing hair loss, when she was six months old.
  • After Neehar’s mundan ceremony in childhood, her hair grew back. However, by the time she was in elementary school, she started losing her hair in patches, which led her to wear wigs.
  • When Neehar was six, her mother once filled her eyebrow before a party, which made her feel something was wrong with her. As she grew older, she became increasingly aware of societal judgements and comments, which only deepened her fear and self-doubt.
  • Neehar’s parents were very cautious about how others saw their family, so they kept her condition a secret. This made Neehar feel ashamed and rely on her wig to hide. To escape judgment and seek better treatment for her, the family later decided to move to the USA.
  • Just before her senior year, her hair grew back thick and full after which she stopped wearing wigs. However, her hair started falling out again significantly after six months.
  • Neehar later joined an alopecia support group where she interacted with people from diverse backgrounds, including children, teens, and adults, sharing their journeys with the condition; she attended the support group for nearly 10 years.
  • Neehar then decided to shave her head and celebrated it with a party called #Neehar’sBaldBash. Her father shaved her head during the event, while her friends captured the moment and shared it on social media.
  • A week after the party, during her sister’s wedding reception with about 300 guests, Neehar confronted the silent questions and curiosity about her condition by explaining what alopecia is and why she had chosen to shave her head.
