| Controversies | Chartered Flight travel In June 2025, a chartered Falcon 2000 aircraft reportedly flew from New Delhi to Patna carrying IAS officer Nilesh Ramchandra Deore and three members of his family. The issue was raised in the Bihar Legislative Assembly by RJD MLA Rahul Sharma, who questioned how a civil servant could afford a chartered flight. He specifically asked who paid for the flight and whether official permission was taken for the travel. According to the allegation, the aircraft did not park at the regular civilian terminal in Patna but reportedly went to a flying institute facility. Rahul Sharma, MLA from Ghosi in Jehanabad district, demanded that the officer’s tenure be audited to verify financial and administrative propriety. Congress representatives also questioned whether public money was used for the journey. At the time of the controversy, Nilesh Ramchandra Deore was serving as Secretary in the Tourism and Civil Aviation departments of the Bihar government. Bihar Rural Works Minister Ashok Choudhary responded in the Assembly defending the officer. He stated that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Civil Aviation Secretary Deore, and he had travelled officially from Patna to Delhi. According to the minister, the aircraft was already scheduled to return to Patna, and Deore and his family boarded it on the return leg. The government’s position suggested that no additional financial burden was placed on the state exchequer. However, the government did not publicly clarify whether Deore or his family paid any fare for occupying the seats. During the debate, Ashok Choudhary referred to Deore’s Dalit identity while responding to Opposition criticism. He questioned whether members of Dalit or backward communities did not have the right to travel by aircraft. This shifted the political discussion from financial accountability to caste-related arguments. The Congress responded that the issue was about transparency and use of public resources, not caste identity. Congress spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari stated that the government should clarify whether payment was made and under what terms. The central unanswered question remains whether any fare was paid for the officer’s family members. |
