On 28 June 2022, a Twitter user named Hanuman Bhakt @balajikijaiiin shared Pratik Sinha’s tweet, posted in 2015, in which Sinha had mocked Lord Ganesha and questioned the existence of a man with an elephant head. In the tweet, Hanuman Bhakt accused Sinha of hurting the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and urged the Dehli Police to take action against him. Previously, Hanuman Bhakt had highlighted Mohammed Zubair’s 2018 tweet which led to his arrest by the Delhi Police on 27 June 2022 after being booked under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between religious groups) and 295 (injuring or defiling a place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the IPC.   • Pratik Sinha is an Indian software engineer and journalist who is known for being the co-founder of the non-profit fact-checking website Alt News in 2017 along with Mohammed Zubair.
  • Growing up in Ahemdabad, Pratik used to visit Kolkata during his summer vacations.
  • Pratik Sinha’s parents founded the independent civil rights organisation named Jan Sangharsh Manch in Gujarat to address issues of labour and workers’ rights. The organisation is known for legally representing the 2002 Gujarat violence victims.
  • Born to activist parents, Sinha developed political and social acumen at a very early age. In an interview, he said,

    I had a childhood where dinner-table conversations revolved around sociopolitical issues. So that was always at the back of my mind.”

    I documented the march on social media. That had a lot of impact and I thought, maybe, I should do something media-related. Moreover, I was not all that happy with my engineering career. I felt my work was only benefiting the economically privileged.”

  • In February 2017, Pratik Sinha and Mohammed Zubair launched the Alt News website in Ahmedabad to combat the phenomenon of fake news. Initially, Zubair only aided Sinha in running the site and continued his job at Nokia. In September 2018, Zubair finally quit his job at Nokia and became a full-time employee of Alt News. In December 2019, Zubair became a director of the Pravda Media Foundation, the parent company of Alt News.
  • Later, Sinha moved to Kolkata, West Bengal, to set up a branch of Alt News.
  • Following Zubair’s arrest in June 2022, various media houses falsely reported that his bank account had transactions over Rs 50 lakh in the previous days.
