Political Journey • He contested as an independent candidate from Ulhasnagar constituency in 1971 where he was supported by both Shiv Sena and Bhartiya Jan Sangh.
• Jethmalani was the chairman of Bar Association of India during the Emergency period in India (1975-77).
• He retained his seat in 1980 general elections.
• Jethmalani could not keep his seat in 1985 general elections after losing it to Sunil Dutt of Indian National Congress.
• In 1988, he became a Member of Rajya Sabha.

• Jethmalani came as a rival to Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the general elections of 2004 contesting as an independent player. He, however, lost it to the latter.
• In 2010, BJP gave him a Rajya Sabha ticket from Rajasthan and he was selected.
• It was in May 2013 that BJP expelled him from the party for coming six years for because of his Anti-party remarks.
• Rashtriya Janata Dal nominated him to the Raya Sabha in 2016 and he was selected from Bihar.

  • While at school, he got a double promotion because of his intelligence. This made him complete his matriculation at just 13.
  • A resolution was passed to allow him to complete his LLB at just 17 but the degree did not entitle him to practice law because 21 was the minimum age to appear in a court as a lawyer at that time. He appealed the issue to the legal system, and system upon review considered his request and he was appointed as a practising lawyer at 18.
  • He had his own law firm in Karachi with his senior friend A.K. Brohi and upon his friend’s advice, he came to India in 1948 when riots broke out in Karachi.
  • Jethmalani became a part-time professor at Government Law College in 1953 where he taught both graduate and post-graduate students.
  • He has served as a Chairman of Bar Association of India for 4 tenures both before and after the Emergency period.
  • Well known for speaking his head, he has proved it several a times. In 2011, at a reception hosted by Pakistan High Commission for the Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, and in the presence of Chinese ambassador, Jethmalani called China an enemy of both India and Pakistan.
