She predominantly works in Tamil and Malayalam films. She has worked in a few Telegu and Kannada films as well.

She is a trained Carnatic singer. She has sung songs for devotional albums on Chottanikarai Bhagavathi. She has also sung in a few Malayalam films. Ramya sung the Tamil song Fy Fy Fy Kalaichu Fy for the film Pandiya Naadu (2013) as well as Mama for the film Sakalakala Vallavan (1982).

She started her career as a child artist and has appeared in a few supporting roles in films like Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka (2001) as Sethulekshmi and Gramophone (2003) as Sachi’s sister.
