Controversies• His sudden oust from the two T20 matches against Sri Lanka in 2015 drew the attention of media which later became an unnecessary issue according to the Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis. He said that these headlines overshadow their performance and past victories against the Sri Lankan cricket team.

• In June 2017, after Pakistan had won their last pool match of Champions Trophy against Sri Lanka to make it to the semifinals, Sarfraz was fined 20% of his match fees by the Panel of ICC Match Referees after they found Pakistan to be one over short when time allowances were taken into consideration. The verdict said if Pakistan team violated the Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and player support panel, skipper of the team could face one match ban in the tournament. All the other players were fined 10% of their match fees under the law.
