- While studying in class 3, he joined a local academy to learn to play harmonium but left it after three months.
- He got interested in hockey when he was about 9 years of age after watching older boys playing hockey.
- Initially, he wanted to play hockey only until the national level to get a government job.
- In an interview, he talked about using a broken hockey stick for the first two years after starting to play hockey due to the lack of proper equipment in his hometown, and said,
Whenever it used to have a crack, my father would fix it with nails and tape it. For two years, I played with that broken stick.”
- In 2021, the Punjab Government renamed Government Senior Secondary School, Attari in Amritsar, Punjab, to Olympian Shamsher Singh Government Senior Secondary School for his contribution to the Summer Olympics, held in Tokyo in 2021.
