  • Suruchi Phogat was born in Sasroli village of Jhajjar district, Haryana, where her sporting journey started under family guidance.
  • Her father Inder Singh, a former havildar in the army, had tried wrestling and cross-country running during his youth.
  • Initially, the family considered wrestling for Suruchi, but after a collarbone injury, they shifted focus towards sports shooting.
  • Inder took her to the Guru Dronacharya Shooting Academy in Bhiwani, located about 60 kilometres from their village.
  • He travelled daily with her by train from Jharli railway station to Bhiwani, while her mother managed household and farm work.
  • Her coach, Suresh Singh, an ex-armyman, trained her at his private range and guided her development in the sport.
  • At 19, Suruchi won her first ISSF World Cup gold in the women’s 10m pistol event in Buenos Aires. She followed it with gold medals at World Cups in Lima and Munich, completing a hat-trick of international titles.

  • In Lima, she defeated Paris 2024 Olympic double medallist Manu Bhaker, who also hails from Jhajjar district in Haryana.
