Some Lesser Known Facts About Tommy Oswald

Tommy Oswald grew up in South Australia. He was an Australian runner.

As a teenager, he developed a passion for distance running and joined local community clubs, including the Mingara Athletics Club.

Tommy was recognised for his exceptional work. In 2015, at the age of 23, he drew national attention when he welcomed his 17-year-old homeless and pregnant cousin, Kiarna, into his home. In an interview, he said that,

“She didn’t ask me if she could stay with me, but I had that day off work so I drove down to the Gold Coast straight away and picked her up.”

As a runner and sports enthusiast, he established one of the country’s largest athletics communities, Athletes Australia, a Facebook group with over 35,000 members. This group became a safe space for athletes to connect, share experiences, and support one another.

He didn’t participate in any Olympic games, although he won various medals at national and international athletics competitions.

In an interview, Tommy revealed that during the 2015 Oceania Games, he had to withdraw from the final round due to a family emergency. Following that, he decided to quit professional running. He mentioned that he started hanging out with bad people, doing bad things.

However, after five years with the help of his coach and some friends, he returned to professional running in 2020, and at a tournament, he recorded a time of 11.77 seconds in the 100 meters, despite running into a headwind (a wind which blows in the opposite direction to the one in which you are moving).

Tommy was well-known for staying back after events to help clean up, organising carpool rides for those who needed assistance getting to events, and sending supportive messages to runners injured or struggling in life.

His fellow athletes, coaches, and everyday runners described him as “Australia’s nicest bloke.”

On 20 July 2025, he suddenly passed away at his residence in Adelaide, South Australia. As of 23 July 2025, police are still investigating his death.

One of Oswald’s friends, Jason Wright, has set up a GoFundMe page to provide financial support to his wife and daughter. After his death, his friend posted,

‘I am privileged to have been Tommy’s mate for 10 years. He was the guy that helps you move, jumps on a ladder and helps you paint a gutter, picks you up from the pub drunk or goes for a long beach walk and listens to your problems. Many of my network and friends have been privileged to experience his friendship and/or had the opportunity to work with him and I am now asking you to help his family with a gesture of goodwill.’
