  • During his college days, V. D. Satheesan joined the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and started his political journey.
  • In 1986, KSU appointed him as the Chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union (MGUU). He served in the position till 1987.

  • After that, the National Students’ Union elected him as its secretary.
  • V. D. Satheesan then served KSU for three consecutive years.
  • An old magazine of Sacred Heart College described him as a tireless speaker and writer. It mentioned him as,

    A powerful orator who did not tire, did not flinch, did not retreat in the face of the enemy’s killing cries, who made the heavy stone walls of Sacred Heart College burn.”

  • Reportedly, during his college days, V. D. Satheesan used to travel all over Kerala to win awards for his college.
  • Once during a media talk, the vice-principal of Sacred Heart College of his time, described V. D. Satheesan as a respectful, rightful, and morally conscious student leader during the heated protests.
  • During his college days, he used to attend meetings organised by P V Thampi, a late environmentalist. In these meetings, he received the knowledge of books, socio-political issues, and public problems.

  • After completing his formal education, he practised law for ten years at the Kerala High Court in the 1990s.
  • In 1996, when V. D. Satheesan was practicing law, he contested during the Kerala Legislative Assembly elections from the Paravur constituency as a Indian National Congress candidate and lost.

  • His opponent P. Raju, a Communist Party of India candidate, defeated him with a few votes.
  • In 2001, V. D. Satheesan again contested on the ticket of INC from the Paravur constituency in Kerala and won.
  • After that, he consecutively won from the same constituency in 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021, and 2026.

  • In 2001, V. D. Satheesan received 48,859 votes and defeated his opponent P.Raju, a Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate.
  • He defeated K.M Dinakaran of CPI in the 2006 Kerela Legislative assembly elections and received 51,099 votes.
  • In 2011, he contested from the Paravur constituency and won after defeating his opponent Pannian Ravindran of CPI.
  • In 2016, V. D. Satheesan received 74,985 votes in the Kerala Legislative assembly elections and defeated his opponent Sarada Mohan, a CPI candidate.

  • In May 2021, the Congress Working Committee appointed him as the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly.

  • Reportedly, during this period, V. D. Satheesan had no experience in the ministry as he never took any ministerial position earlier because of his connections with some communist leaders.
  • After that, he became an important leader in the United Democratic Front (Kerala) (UDF).

  • That same year, V. D. Satheesan contested on the ticket of INC from the Paravur constituency in Kerala and won. He received 82,264 votes and defeated his opponent M.T. Nixon, a CPI candidate.
  • He often criticises the opposition in Kerala, Left Democratic Front.
  • Under his leadership, UDF has won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the 2025 local government elections, and the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections.
  • In 2025, one of his party MLAs, Rahul Mamkootathil, was accused in a sexual harassment case. Later, he was removed from the party; however, V. D. Satheesan faced many allegations from opposition and general public.
  • In 2026, United Democratic Front (Kerala) (UDF) won 102 out of 140 seats under his leadership.

  • He contested from the Paravur constituency and won. He received 78,658 votes and defeated E. T. Taison, a CPI candidate.
  • On 14 May 2026, the Indian National Congress (INC) appointed V. D. Satheesan as the 13th Chief Minister of Kerala.
  • As a political leader, he is known for his clear, confident, and aggressive behaviour at work.
  • He reportedly does not follow the traditional Congress politics. During elections, he never takes help from any communal organisations in Kerala.
  • V. D. Satheesan follows young and reform-oriented approach at work.
  • He serves as a President of many trade unions such as, the Cochin Refineries Employees Association, the Fact Employees Congress, the Premier Tyres Workers Union, the IRE Workers Union, the Technical Employees and Staff Association of TELK, the TATA Oil Mills Workers Union, Cochin, the Carborandum Universal Employees Union, Koratty, the Kerala Books and Publications Society Staff and Workers Union, the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank Employees Union, the Kerala State Cooperative Rubber Marketing Federation Employees Congress, and the Masoneilan Employees Union, INTUC.
  • V. D. Satheesan is an Executive Member of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and a Member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
