  • In 2001, Y Puran Kumar became an IPS officer of the Haryana Cadre.
  • In 2021, he appealed to the Punjab and Haryana High Court three times over disputes with the government. He questioned the promotions given to IPS officers from the 1991, 1996, 1997, and 2005 batches.

  • In 2022, he accused many senior officials of harassing him, including DGP Shatrughan Kapoor, former Chief Secretary T.V.S.N. Prasad, former Home Secretary Rajiv Arora, and former DGP Manoj Yadav.

  • Y Puran Kumar claimed that Rajiv Arora, then Home Secretary, acted unfairly while preparing an inquiry report that supported Manoj Yadav. The case was later taken to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

  • He also fought a long legal battle over the issue of two government houses being allotted to each of nine IPS officers.

  • In 2023, he challenged his posting to a non-cadre post.

  • In 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections, Y Puran Kumar complained to the Election Commission against the then Chief Electoral Officer, Anurag Aggarwal.

  • He claimed that the State Election Commission was biased based on caste. He complained to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, too.

  • Y Puran Kumar had held several key positions in Haryana, such as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in the Rohtak Division, IGP (Home Guards), and IGP (Telecommunications).
  • While working as Inspector General of the Rohtak Division, he investigated the death case of Manisha, a teacher from Bhiwani, Haryana, in August 2025.
  • On 29 September 2025, Y Puran Kumar received a transfer as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) at the Police Training College in Sunaria.

  • He was on leave until 7 October 2025.

  • On 7 October 2025, Y Puran Kumar died by suicide at his official home in Sector 11, Chandigarh, India.

  • That day, his wife, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, was in Japan with an official group led by Haryana’s chief minister Nayab Singh Saini.

  • The police found his body in the basement of the house.

  • At the time of Kumar’s death, two servants and his 17-year-old daughter were in the house.

  • His daughter did not hear the shot. She discovered her father’s body at about 1:15 pm on 7 October 2025 and then called the police.

  • According to police, Y Puran Kumar went to the basement and shot himself there, as it was soundproof, so the gunshot could not be heard outside.
  • The police believed the bullet was fired much earlier than when his body was found. They said that he used his gunman’s gun to commit suicide.

  • On 8 October 2025, the UT police stated that a will and a 9-page suicide note were recovered from the scene, which reportedly held some officers in Haryana responsible for his extreme step.
  • The police investigations found that his suicide had a link to a corruption case in Rohtak. The case was filed against a policeman named Sushil Kumar.

  • Sushil Kumar was accused of demanding a bribe of Rs. 2.5 lakh from a liquor contractor.

  • Reportedly, Sushil Kumar demanded the money on behalf of  Y Puran Kumar, who was serving as the Inspector General of Police in the Rohtak Division at that time.

  • During investigations, the Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) claimed that the liquor contractor had met Y Puran Kumar at his office two months earlier.

  • During the meeting, Y Puran Kumar told the contractor to cooperate with Sushil Kumar.

  • On 6 October 2025, the Rohtak police arrested Sushil Kumar. After that, he was taken to court and sent to judicial custody.

  • In his statement to the police, Sushil said that Y Puran Kumar had asked him to collect money for him.

  • A case was filed against Sushil Kumar at the Urban Estate police station in Rohtak under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

  • The police claimed in the media that they had audio and video recordings of the case. The police said,

    We have audio and video clips in which Sushil Kumar is demanding bribe from the contractor on behalf of the former Rohtak IG.”

  • According to some media reports, a well-known gangster was demanding ransom from liquor contractor Praveen Bansal, who then met the then Rohtak Inspector General (IG) Y Puran Kumar and asked for police protection.
