Some Lesser Known Facts About Indira Banerjee

• Indira Banerjee is an Indian female Judge of the Supreme Court of India who became the eighth woman judge of SCI in Indian history in 2018. She was the second woman judge to be appointed as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court in 2017-18.

• Indira Banerjee started practising law at the Calcutta High Court as an advocate on 5 July 1985. She got expertise in both the Original and Appellate Sides at Calcutta High Court. She was promoted as the permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court on 5 February 2002. Indira Banerjee was given the responsibility for four years as the chairperson of the Calcutta High Court Services Committee during her work at the Calcutta. She also served as the Executive Chairperson of the West Bengal State Legal Services Authority for one year.

• Indira Banerjee was appointed by the then Chief Justice of India, for a week, at the training in Judicial Administration at the Civil Services College, Singapore, in July 2013.

• Indira Banerjee was appointed as the Chief Justice at the Delhi High court on 8 August 2016. She also served as the chairperson of the Delhi State Legal Services Authority during her work at Delhi.

• Indira Banerjee took the charge as a Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on 5 April 2017. She succeeded Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul who was promoted to the Supreme Court of India.

• Indira Banerjee is the second woman after Justice Kanta Kumari Bhatnagar to head the Madras High Court as a judge. On Indira’s appointment to the Madara High Court, the notification issued by the government of India was read as,
  

  In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Kumari Justice Indira Banerjee, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India with effect from the date she assumes charge of her office.”

• Indira Banerjee was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 7 August 2018 till her superannuation on 24 September 2022. She was among the four women judges who sit on the panel of the Supreme Court Judges including Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi. On 31 August 2021, it was the first time in Indian Supreme Court’s history that nine judges took oath in one day. The names of those judges were Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Justice Hima Kohli, Justice B V Nagarathna, Justice C T Ravikumar, Justice M M Sundresh, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice P S Narasimha.

• According to Indira Banerjee, she never attended court in her third and fourth years of law studies. In an interview with Free Press media house, she stated,
  

  I when i visited the court, I went to see a case being heard and not as an intern. I heard the pleadings and that changed the course of my life. I was preparing for the civil services exams and had cleared two stages. But then I decided to continue with my practice in the High Court. I found that not all cases were interesting. After assisting my seniors in the High Court, I started practising solo. I had very little idea of the practical aspects of the law.”

• Indira Banerjee attended and delivered a speech on the misappropriation of public funds as an economic offence in February 2019 at the Tamil Nadu state judicial Academy (TNSJA) at Racecourse that was a national conference on Economic offences and Emerging dynamics and dimensions. She said,
  

  People’s money that is handled in a wrong way is also an economic offence.”

• In 2019, amid the West Bengal general elections, Indira Banerjee withdrew herself from West Bengal’s post-poll violence case in which many BJP workers were killed. She was trolled on various social media accounts as she was demanding an apology from other BJP workers for defaming Mamta Banerjee on social media websites.

• According to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indira Banerjee is her guru-sister. He said in a conversation with a media house in November 2019 that he and Indira both were the devotees of the Ramakrishna Mission. The late Swami Atmasthananda was their spiritual guru. Narendra Modi further added that he used to stay at Rajkot ashram, and those who had the same guru were brothers and sisters according to the Hindu tradition. ^[4]Open The Magazine

• During the COVID-19 tough times in 2020, Indira Banerjee requested the government of India to equally distribute the COVID-19 vaccination to all the states of India. She appealed to the government while addressing a webinar on “World Human Rights Day” organised at St. Thomas College of Law. She spoke,
  

  We must ensure that there is equitable distribution of the COVID vaccine, that the benefits of the vaccine are not just confined to the affluent countries but also extended to the less-developed in the underdeveloped countries.”
