Some Lesser Known Facts About Dhruv Sangari

• Dhruv Sangari is a Sufi and classical Indian singer, composer, and lyricist. He is the son of noted scholar and author Kumkum Sangari and painter Mahendra ‘Manu’ Sangari.

• At the age of seven, he started learning Hindustani Classical Music and playing Tabla. Later, he inclined towards Sufism and Sufi music, which led him to learn qawwali from Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami of the Qawwal-Bachhe Gharana at the dargah of the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya in Delhi.

• He studied Hindustani Classical Music at Delhi University, where he received music training under the mentorship of Dr. Najma Parveen Ahmed, Dr. Krishna Bisht, and Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan. Later, he gave performances on many platforms including ETV Urdu.

• After graduating from Delhi University in 2001, he formed a Sufi band, Rooh.

• According to Dhruv Sangari, he grew up listening to Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

• Bilal Chishty Sangari belongs to a family that has no background in music, and he is the first person from his family to venture into the music industry.

• He is known for singing many popular Bollywood numbers including the chartbuster ‘Lutt Jawaan’ from the film Commando: A One Man Army starring Vidyut Jammwal. He is also known for the hit Coke Studio (India) MTV track ‘Kyun Na’ composed by Amit Trivedi. 

• In 2014, he was featured in Fox Life’s series Sound Trek (season 2) in the episode ‘Dumdam Must Qalandar.’ In 2017, he collaborated with London-based composer Nitin Sawhney and gave voice for the score of Andy Serkis’s film Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle.

• The Rotary Club, Amir Khusro Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, and the University of Baroda have recognized Dhruv’s work in Sufi-Bhakti music.
