Some Lesser Known Facts About Nadav Lapid

• Nadav Lapid is a retired Israel Defence Forces (IDF) personnel, who is also a filmmaker. On 28 November 2022, he received a lot of backlash as the Chief Juror at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa after he called The Kashmir Files “disturbing and vulgar.” He is also known for his pro-Palestine and anti-Israel stand.

• Nadav served in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) as a conscript for 32 months after which he left Israel for Paris. He served as a conscript because of a law in Israel that requires all citizens to serve in the military for some time.

• In 1983, Nadav worked in an Israeli documentary titled “Diary 1973-1983.”

• Nadav penned a novel titled Continua Bailando, which was published in 2001.

• In 2003, Nadav not only directed but also wrote the screenplay for Proyect Gvul (Border Project), a documentary film that was nominated for the Cinefondation Award in France in 2004.

• Nadav directed a 2005 short film titled Kvish (Road). He also worked as a scriptwriter for the film. In 2006, at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland, Kvish was nominated for the Golden Pardino – Leopards of Tomorrow Award.

• Nadav wrote the script and directed the 2006 short film titled Ha-Chavera Shell Emile (Emile’s Girlfriend), which was nominated in France for the Cinefondation Award in 2006.

• Nadav acted in a short drama film titled Nobody’s Girlfriend. The film was released in 2007.

• Nadav co-director a documentary titled Aza Sderot: HaChaim Lamron HaKol (Gaza Sderot: Life in Spite of Everything), which was released in 2009.

• His directed feature film Ha-shoter (Policeman) received numerous awards at film festivals like the Jerusalem Film Festival (2011), Locarno International Film Festival (2011), Philadelphia Film Festival (2011), and Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (2012).

• He co-directed a documentary titled Footsteps in Jerusalem, which was released in 2013.

• Nadav not only directed and wrote the script for the 2014 film Haganenet (The Kindergarten Teacher) but was also its executive producer. The film was showcased at the 2014 International Critics’ Week in France. The film has also won several accolades in film festivals such as the Faro Island Film Festival (2014), Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (2015), and many more.

• In the 2014 comedy-drama film Love Letter to Cinema, Nadav not only worked as a co-director but also wrote the script for the film.

• Nadav directed the short drama film “Lama?” (Why?) in 2015. He also wrote the script for the film. “Lama?” and was nominated at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2015.

• In the same year, at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland, Nadav was invited as a Member of the Golden Leopard Jury.

• In 2016, Nadav’s directed short film Myomano Shel Tzlam Hatonot (From the Diary of a Wedding Photographer) was released. He also wrote the film’s screenplay.

• At the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, Nadav became a Member of the International Critics’ Week Jury.

• Nadav directed a 2019 film titled Synonymes (Synonyms). He wrote the screenplay of the film with his father, Haim Lapid. At the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival, the film won FIPRESCI Prize and the Golden Berlin Bear Award. During an interview, while talking about his film, Nadav said,
  

  The Israeli collective soul is a sick soul. Something in the deepest essence of the Israeli existence is false – is rotten. It’s not just Benjamin Netanyahu – it’s not special to Israel. But, at the same time, I think this Israeli sickness or nature is characterized by young Israeli men muscular, smiling, who don’t raise any questions and don’t have any doubts. They are extremely proud of being Israeli. They have a totally dichotomist vision of existence: Us versus all the others.”

• Nadav’s directed 2021 film Ha’berech (Ahed’s Knee) won the Jury Prize at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

• In the same year, he appeared as a character named Kurt in Madeleine Collins, a drama film.

• Nadav directed a 2021 short film titled The Star. He also wrote its screenplay.

• In 2021, Nadav was invited as a Member of the Official Competition Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival.

• During an interview, Nadav said that he was working on another feature film on Ahed Tamini, a Palestinian girl, who was imprisoned after she slapped an Israeli soldier.

• Nadav became Chief Juror at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa in November 2022.

• Nadav is also a well-known critic of Israel. In early 2022, Nadav and 250 other filmmakers from Israel signed an open letter against the decision of the Government of Israel to establish the Shomron (Samaria/West Bank) Film Fund. According to Nadav, the establishment of the fund was a desperate attempt by the government to portray a positive image of its occupation of the West Bank. While talking about it, during an interview, Nadav told the media,
  

  Inviting the Israeli filmmakers to actively participate in the whitewashing the Occupation in exchange for financial support and prizes. The Shomron Film Fund’s official mandate is to distribute grants to the Jewish settlers who reside in the West Bank (“Judea and Samaria”) and to productions by Israeli citizens filmed in the West Bank.”
