  • Saweety Boora is an Indian boxer who competes in different boxing championships under the light heavyweight category (81 kg). In 2023, Saweety held the title of world champion after she defeated China’s Wang Lina in the light heavyweight (81 kg) category at the Women’s World Boxing Championship, which was held in New Delhi.
  • Saweety Boora grew up in a Haryanavi family in Hisar, Haryana. Her father, Mahender Singh Boora, played basketball at the national level.

  • Saweety’s sister, Siwi Boora, who competes in the lightweight category, was motivated and encouraged by her sister to take up boxing as a career.
  • As per some media sources, Deepak and Saweety met in Rohtak, Haryana in 2015 during the inauguration of the Haryana Marathon, where both were invited as chief guests. After their first meeting, they got romantically inclined towards each other, and eventually, Deepak proposed to Saweety for marriage.
  • During her school days, Saweety used to train in kabaddi, and she played at the state level, representing Haryana’s women’s kabaddi team. However, her interest shifted to boxing after her father advised and encouraged her to train in the sport. Consequently, in 2009, Saweety quit playing kabaddi and started training for boxing with her coach, who used to train her in the farmlands near the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University.
  • In an interview, Saweety talked about how she switched from kabaddi to boxing on her father’s encouragement. Further, on being asked the reasons behind pursuing a career as a boxer, Saweety said,

    The reason I chose boxing was because I used to hardly talk in school but every time things went south, I couldn’t handle it. I used to explain to them the situation first and when they spoke back, I couldn’t reply and told myself to keep calm, and even after that, if they didn’t understand, I would just punch them then.”

  • Saweety, after receiving sufficient training in boxing, started taking part in various boxing tournaments. She participated in the 4th Junior Women National Boxing Championship in 2009 at the Monual Haq Stadium Rajendra Nagar in Patna, where she bagged a gold medal.
  • In 2010, Saweety participated and won a silver medal at the 1st Youth Women Haryana State Boxing Championship in Haryana.
  • In an interview, Saweety revealed that while preparing for her international debut match, she got sick. However, without losing hope, she continued her training and said,

    In 2014, I fell sick because of typhoid and had to get admitted. And at the time they announced that whoever becomes the National gold medalist, only they will go and represent at the world championship. My doctor advised me to rest but the love for the sport kept me going and I ran away from the hospital, took the train by running a sprint of 100m and fainted in the train. My parents told me to come back but I was determined to represent India and they blessed me and let me carry on.”

  • In 2019, Navbharat Foundation invited Saweety as a chief guest for the Run For Security event at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Gurugram, Haryana.
  • In an interview, Saweety stated that she was depressed and demoralized after she was not rendered with the opportunity to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifiers. Out of despair, she decided to quit boxing and pursued a career in kabaddi. However, after a year of training in kabaddi, Saweety got the news that the trials for the Asian Boxing Championship 2021 had begun. Hearing the news, Saweety’s husband, Deepak  Niwas Hooda encouraged her to participate in the trials and prepare for further boxing tournaments.

  • On 8 January 2023, Saweety and her husband Deepak Niwas Hooda joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra on the invitation by the Indian politician Rahul Gandhi.

  • In 2023, Saweety defeated China’s Wang Lina in the light heavyweight category (81 kg) and held the title of “world champion” at the Women’s World Boxing Championship. Consequently, she became India’s seventh boxer (male or female) to win a gold medal at the World Boxing Championship.     I am thrilled after fulfilling my dream of becoming the World Champion. The bout went well and I was able to execute our planning perfectly. My performances in the tournament got better as the bouts progressed with my body also responding well. I want to thank the fans for their constant love and support.”
