Some Lesser Known Facts About Priyadarshini Patil
- Priyadarshini Patil (1980-2023) was an Indian NRI woman who became viral following her suicide in 2023, which occurred after Australian authorities took custody of her children.
- After completing her engineering degree, she relocated to Verlie Street in Sydney, Australia, with her husband and began her career working for an IT firm.
- Her son Amartya was diagnosed with Ulcerative colitis (UC) at the age of ten which is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by inflammation and ulcers in the large intestine. He received treatment at Westmead Children’s Public Hospital in Sydney, which included injections every two months.
- When his condition did not improve over the years, in 2019, she filed a medical negligence complaint in hopes of admitting him to a private hospital; however, the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) filed a counter case (numbered 2021/00304854-001) against her and her husband, accusing them of not properly caring for their children, which they claimed led to the health issue.
- The authorities later took custody of both children. In response, she initiated an online petition to regain custody of her children and sought assistance from the Indian Consulate in Sydney on 28 July 2023, but her efforts were unsuccessful in reclaiming her children’s custody. - In August 2023, she travelled from Australia to India and arrived in Belagavi city, located in Karnataka, India. She sent her belongings via courier to her parent’s residence in Dharwad. On 20 August 2023, her body was discovered in the Naviluteertha dam within the backwaters of the Malaprabha River near Saundatti, a town in Belagavi.
- Her relatives informed the authorities that they had received a note in which she expressed her intent to end her life at Gokak Falls. In the note, she accused Australian authorities and neighbours in Sydney of harassing her, which ultimately led her to commit suicide.
