Some Lesser Known Facts About Mukesh Singh

  • Mukesh Singh is an IPS officer of the 1996 batch of the AGMUT cadre who has received many gallantry awards for his role in counter-terrorist operations in Jammu & Kashmir. He came to the limelight following the announcement of the Union government’s decision to send him to ITBP on deputation as an IG in September 2023.
  • After completing his formal education, Singh took the UPSC civil services exam and passed it. Thereafter, he joined the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana. There, he trained to become a police officer.
  • Mukesh Singh finished his training at SVPNPA on 4 September 1996 and was assigned to the AGMUT.

  • Singh was posted to Pulawama as an SP during the height of the insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir. He received recognition for his role in supporting Indian forces in their anti-terror operations.
  • He played a crucial part at NIA in countering separatist activities in Kashmir by interrupting the foreign funds received by separatists.
  • In 2018, during his tenure as IGP NIA, Singh took on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India Challenge and encouraged his fellow NIA colleagues to join the fitness initiative.

  • In his role as the IGP of Jammu Zone, he played a crucial role in executing the operation that resulted in the elimination of the infamous militant Tahir Ahmed Bhat. After the killing of Tahir, Shopian and Kishtwar of Kashmir were declared free from terrorism for the first time since the 1980s.

  • In September 2023, a notification from the Indian government announced Mukesh Singh’s appointment as the Inspector General (IG) of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The notification also stated that he would hold the post till 2027. The notification read,

    The undersigned is directed to refer to UT Division’s OM No. 14023/03/2022- UTS-Idated 18.09.2023 on the subject mentioned above and to convey the approval of the competent authority for the appointment of Shri Mukesh Singh, IPS (AGMUT :1996) as Inspector General (Level-14 in the Pay Matrix) in Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) against existing vacancy on deputation basis for a period of five years from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier. It is requested to relieve Shri Mukesh Singh, IPS (AGMUT:1996) immediately to enable him to take up his new assignments at the Centre.”

  • In 2022, Mukesh Singh introduced a program in which senior JKP officers were assigned to instruct students in various subjects at government schools. Singh personally taught mathematics at one school. While giving an interview, he talked about it and said,

    We have sent them a circular, asking for their preference of subject, time for teaching and day of the week they can teach. They are given books for prior reading before they start to teach.”
