  • G. P. Singh is an IPS officer of the 1991 batch of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Singh has occupied significant roles in key central organisations like the Special Protection Group (SPG) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). In August 2023, he came to the limelight when he and 13 other IPS officers were appointed as Director Generals by the Indian government.
  • Following the completion of his formal education, Singh took the UPSC civil services exam and passed it. Subsequently, he joined the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVNPA) in Hyderabad, Telangana, where he trained to become a police officer.

  • He was sent to Assam as a trainee IPS officer in 1992, coinciding with the period of highest militancy in the northeast region.

  • He played a significant role in breaking down the terrorist networks of the prohibited organizations ULFA and NDFB while serving as IGP in Guwahati.
  • In 2010, G. P. Singh assumed the role of Inspector General (IG) for North Assam’s Tezpur region in the Sonitpur district; he was tasked with quelling the turmoil that ensued after an ethnic massacre occurred in the area.

However, his time at the NIA was curtailed when he was summoned back to Guwahati due to escalating civil unrest prompted by protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (Bill) in 2019.

  • As the State Nodal Officer in Assam, he was tasked with overseeing the movement of individuals between different states amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and the consequent countrywide lockdown. He is recognized for successfully facilitating the secure return of numerous individuals who were stuck in different parts of India and other countries.
  • In 2021, Aishwarya Singh, daughter of Gyanendra Singh, chose to discontinue her training with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and instead joined SVPNPA. In February 2023, as Aishwarya completed her training at SVPNPA, a video capturing a touching moment of her and Gyanendra exchanging salutes gained widespread attention online. This heartwarming interaction prompted Gyanendra to take to Twitter, where he shared a post expressing his overwhelming pride in Aishwarya’s remarkable accomplishment.

  • In July 2023, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), an outlawed militant group, issued a warning to DGP G. P. Singh, cautioning him about potential consequences unless he took measures to stop the police from conducting encounters. ULFA further alleged that the Assam Police, led by Singh, was responsible for the deaths of innocent individuals unrelated to the extremist activities. The ultimatum of the outlawed organisation read,

    DGP Gyanendra Pratap (GP) Singh repeatedly has displayed bravery by doing fake encounters of innocents. Such incidents should be stopped immediately. This is our last warning.”

  • He has been involved in various UNDP projects that aim to improve the organization and management of India’s law enforcement system. Additionally, he journeyed to the United Kingdom where he collaborated with various police divisions, including the Bramshill National Police Training facility.
