Some Lesser Known Facts About Sombir Singh

  • Sombir Singh was a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army, who won the Shaurya Chakra, which is India’s third-highest gallantry award given in peacetime, in 2019. It was revealed in January 2024 that Barun Sobti had been chosen to play the character of Sombir Singh in the second season of the show Rakshak- India’s Braves.
  • Sombir Singh joined the Indian Army as a recruit following the completion of his formal education. He underwent a strict military training process as a recruit at the Jat Regimental Center (JRC) in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
  • In 2001, he was allotted the 8th Battalion of the Jat Regiment, and he joined his unit as a sepoy.
  • During his service, Singh received numerous promotions due to organisational, leadership and man management skills and eventually became a naib subedar, i.e., a JCO.
  • Thereafter, he was deployed in Kulgam, Kashmir, where he was a member of the 34th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles with which he was part of many counter-terrorism operations conducted by the Indian Army under Operation Rakshak which was started by the army in the mid-1990s.
  • Sombir was a member of the assault team which received intelligence about the presence of the three dreaded militants in Kulgam’s Turigam village.
  • On 24 February 2019, Singh and his assault team approached the village, where they were engaged in a gunfight by the militants hiding in a building.
  • Under Sombir’s leadership, the team countered the attack of the militants and managed to eliminate some of them.
  • Later, Sombir directed the troops to relocate to the outer periphery of the village to cut off the likely escape route of the remaining militants. While doing so, a militant opened fire on the team which led to a soldier getting severely wounded.
  • To save the soldier, Singh moved out of his cover and engaged the enemy in close-quarter combat. This resulted in the elimination of the terrorist, while Sombir was grievously injured as he received gunshot wounds in the chest and the neck.
  • He was then evacuated and taken to the Badami Bagh Cantonment, where he was admitted to the 92 Base Hospital. However, he could not recover from the injuries and passed away. [3]The Government of India
  • While giving an interview, Priya Singh, one of his daughters, talked about her father’s passing away and said,

It is a proud moment for our family that my martyr father has been awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously for showing courage while fighting with militants. Today, I can say proudly that I am a daughter of a shaheed fauji. It is very difficult to spend life without a father, but he went beyond his duty as a father by sacrificing his life for the nation. I want to say that the government should take care of martyrs’ families from time to time.”
