Some Lesser Known Facts About Baldeo Das Birla

• He was the adopted son of Shiv Narayan Birla. His father was a member of the Marwari tradition.

• Baldeo Das Birla’s father started the cotton trade in 1861, and in 1880, passed its responsibility to Baldeo.

• With his father, he started the trade of cotton, jute, and opium with China.

• Along with making his business successful, Baldeo did a lot of charity work. He donated Rs 1 lakh for gaushalas (cow sheds) in 1880.

• In 1887, Baldeo moved to Calcutta City (now Kolkata) to start a business of jute. He named his company ‘Baldevdas Jugalkishor.’

• He later opened a trading house named ‘Shiv Narain – Baldev Das’ in Bombay.

• He was associated with the establishment of the Calcutta Medical College (now, Medical College, Kolkata).

• Baldeo Das Birla opened the Birla School in Pilani, Rajasthan in 1918. It is one of the oldest schools in Rajasthan. He later opened a Sanskrit library in Banaras and a miscellaneous library in Calcutta.

• He was closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi and funded Gandhiji’s Swaraj Movement.

• Baldeo Das Birla conducted many philanthropic activities in the fields of education and religion. He was a supporter of the Swadeshi movement and contributed to the movement.

• In 1920, he took retirement from his business and started pursuing religious study in Banaras.

• Baldeo Das Birla published a book titled ‘Vedanta va Atmavichara’ in 1935.

• He later built the Birla Mandir, also known as the Laxminarayan Temple. This was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1939.

• In 1944, he got a dam built on Dhosi Hills for the bathing ritual of the pilgrims.
