ControversiesThe Murder Case: In 2007, the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) officials ceased 12.95 kg gold in Chuadanga after a businessman named Saiful Islam informed them. Saiful was later murdered. Anwarul and others were then accused of smuggling gold and murdering Saiful. In 2009, an arrest notice was issued against him, but in 2012, Anwarul was relieved from the case along with others.

Involvement in Smuggling and Extortion: Anwarul faced over nine cases for various charges such as arms, explosives, and narcotics smuggling as well as extortion. As per the affidavit he submitted to the Election Commission of Bangladesh in 2023, he was accused in about 21 cases. In 2008, Interpol issued a notice against him for his involvement in such criminal cases. He, however, was cleared of most charges by 2014. [1]Daily Observer

Over time, Anwarul became well-known in the drug trade and earned the title of the ‘Drug King’ of the Southwest.
  • In 1991, Anwarul reportedly engaged in gold smuggling. By 1996, he expanded into arms smuggling. He was also involved in explosive smuggling.

  • He won the 2018 Bangladeshi general elections by defeating the Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate Md Saiful Islam Firoz by a margin of 2,16,890 votes.
  • On 12 May 2024, Anwarul Azim travelled from Bangladesh to Kolkata, India, for medical treatment. He planned to stay with a friend named Gopal Biswas in Baranagar.
  • On 13 May 2024,  Anwarul went out to see a doctor and told Gopal that he would be back for dinner. However, in the evening, he texted Gopal that he was leaving for Delhi for urgent work and that Gopal did not need to call him as Anwarul would be busy.
  • Anwarul was in contact with his family in Bangladesh till 14 May 2024. On 15 May, he told Gopal that he had arrived in Delhi with VIPs. He reportedly tried to call his personal assistant Abdur Rauf on 16 May, but the call could not connect.
  • On 18 May 2024, Gopal lodged a missing person report for Anwarul at the Baranagar Police Station in West Bengal after being unable to contact or find him. Anwarul’s daughter, on the other hand, filed a missing person’s complaint with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Intelligence Department on 21 May 2024.
  • Soon after the missing complaint was filed, a special investigation team was formed. The case was later taken over by the West Bengal CID team.
  • On 22 May 2024, officials confirmed that Anwarul had been murdered after bloodstains were found at a flat in Sanjeeva Gardens, New Town, Kolkata. He was last spotted at the flat and was not seen leaving it.
  • While some reports claim that his body was still missing, many others say that officials found his dismembered body at the flat.
  • Later, three people were arrested in Bangladesh. Those three people, who were reportedly with Anwarul at the flat, were seen leaving the flat in CCTV footage, but Anwarul was not with them.
  • After further investigation into the case, it was found that Anwarul was killed as part of a plan made by his childhood friend and former partner Akhtaruzzaman Shaheen aka Shaheen Mia, who was upset over a financial dispute related to their gold smuggling operation.

  • Akhtaruzzaman and Anwarul once ran a gold smuggling operation where Akhtaruzzaman smuggled the gold from Dubai and Anwarul ensured its delivery to India. The conflict arose when Anwarul demanded a larger share of the profits from their smuggling operation and kept gold worth over Tk 100 crore to himself.
  • Akhtaruzzaman then held several meetings with others at his flats in Gulshan and Bashundhara in Bangladesh to plan Azim’s murder. However, due to the high vigilance of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), they decided it was too risky for them to execute the plan in Bangladesh.
  • On 25 April 2024, the conspirators rented a flat in New Town, Kolkata, from Bangladesh as they knew Azim often visited that city. On 30 April 2024, Akhtaruzzaman, his girlfriend, and hitman Amanullah (aka Fazl Ahmed Bhuiyan aka Shimul Bhuiyan) travelled to Kolkata to set up the plan.

  • On 13 May 2024, when Azim left his friend’s house in Kolkata to see a doctor, he was picked up by a man named Foysal in a white car and was taken to the rented flat.
  • Within half an hour of entering the flat, Azim was killed. The killers dismembered his body to prevent identification and kept his phone to send misleading messages to his friend Gopal and family members.
  • Azim’s body was first skinned and then cut into small pieces so that it would be difficult to identify as human flesh. Raju, a Kolkata taxi driver, was hired to dispose of the body. His body parts were dumped at different locations in Kolkata.
  • In a CCTV footage, the suspects were seen leaving the flat with a large suitcase, which possibly contained Azim’s remains. They then got into a taxi that was later seized by the police officials.
  • Anwarul loved travelling and often posted his travelling experiences on social media.
