Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashok Gadgil

• In 1979, after completing his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, he moved back to India and stayed in India for five years and worked for a non-profit organisation. While working for the non-profit organisation, his main work focused on technologies related to energy efficiency and renewable energy and policies for the energy-strapped India.

• In 1988, he returned to India and received four Indian patents for solar heaters; however, due to petty politics, he was not able to complete the project and returned to the United States in the same year.

• After returning to the USA, he again began working in the field of energy efficiency and indoor air quality at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).In 1996, he invented the UV Waterworks which was a water purification system that uses UV light from a low-pressure mercury discharge (similar to that in a fluorescent lamp) to disinfect drinking water.

• According to Ashok Gadgil, the idea for the UV Warwerworks first sparked after the outbreak of Cholera in cholera epidemic in South and Southeast Asia in 1993.

• In 1999, Gadgil was featured in the documentary Me and Isaac Newton. The documentary was directed by an English television, film director and producer Michael David Apted. The documentary won several awards.

• In 2004, he became a Co-Editor for Ann—revs. of Environment and Resources and in the same year, he designed a stove for refugees in Darfur, Sudan, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development.

• His main focus for the redesigning of the stoves was on cost and simplicity modifications so that they could be created locally.

• In 2008, he was featured in the documentary  Flow: For Love of Water.

• In 2012, Ashok Gadgil invented a technology for removing arsenic from drinking water with a low-voltage electric current and iron electrodes known as the Electro-Chemical Arsenic Removal (ECAR).

• In 2013, he was inducted into the US National Academy of Engineering.

• In 2014, he was inducted into the class of 2014 National Inventor’s Hall of Fame (NIHF) in Washington D.C.
