Controversies | • Charged excessive money for admission from MBBS students In June 2009, a sting operation by The Times of India revealed that Shree Balaji Medical College and Hospital, founded by S. Jagathrakshakan charged Rs. 20 lakhs for admission in MBBS, directly in violation of the Supreme Court's capitation fee ban. An administrative officer further revealed that the fee collected is directly based on the orders of S. Jagathrakshakan. • Coal Mining scam In 2012, he was accused along with his family of being involved in a coal mining scam that occured in Odisha in 2007. His company, JR Power Gen Pvt Ltd formed a joint venture with the state owned Puducherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC), and was allocated a block of coal despite having no expertise in the utilisation of coal. • Irregular investments in foreign entities In december 2021, Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a complaint against S. Jagathrakshakan and his family under Section 16 of FEMA and charged them with irregular foreign investments. According to the charges, he had invested Rs. 42 crore in a Singaporean shell company and Rs. 9 crore in a Sri Lankan entity. He was also charges with the acquisition of Singaporean shares. • IT raids In october 2023, Income Tax (IT) department raided several places including distilleries and firms owned by S. Jagathrakshakan and accused him of more than Rs. 1000 crore tax evasion. • Penalty of Rs. 908 crore In 2024, Enforcement Directorate (ED) penalised S. Jagathrakshakan and his family for Rs. 908 crore for the violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) rules. ED further stated that it began its investigation on September 2020 after which, it had seized Rs 89.19 crore from S. Jagathrakshakan and his family. |

- He has authored more than 30 books.
- One of his books was released by Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mother Teresa.
- He has written a book that contains his commentary on “Naalaayira Diviya Prabandham” (over 4000 songs sung by the saints of Alvar Saints of the Vaishnavite Sect during the sixth century)
