Some Lesser Known Facts About Indrani Mazumdar

  • Her mother, Vina Mazumdar, served as the Secretary of the first Committee on the Status of Women in India. Vina taught at Patna University for 14 years and was a member of the University Grants Commission, holding a degree from Oxford University.

  • Her father was a musician and a disciple of Ustad Amir Khan. He began his music career late in life and, and, as he was very nervous on stage, he was unable to establish himself as a musician.
  • She and her three siblings were associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) from a young age.
  • In their home, there were frequent discussions about philosophy, politics, and history, exposing her to Marxist ideas from an early age.
  • After completing her postgraduate studies at Delhi University, Indrani Mazumdar enrolled at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1972 for a five-year course.
  • During the Emergency in 1975-76, she was expelled from the JNU as she was politically active as a member of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and served as a student councillor.
  • After the Emergency was declared, there was unrest at JNU, and two strikes took place within the first month.

  • The university authorities decided that 4-5 students, including Indrani Mazumdar, should not continue their studies, leading to her registration being cancelled.
  • She then went back to Delhi University but did not disclose that she had previously been a student at JNU.
  • At Delhi University, Indrani Mazumdar worked to strengthen the SFI from 1976 to 1982.
  • During the Emergency, when she was serving as the councillor for the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), she was given the task of distributing leaflets from the underground movement.
  • Indrani Mazumdar continued to fight against the Emergency as part of a larger political movement.
