Atong Ang came under the spotlight when he was named in the plunder case of then Philippines President Joseph Estrada. He was charged of helping Estrada in stealing 130 million pesos ($2.6 million) in tobacco taxes in 1999 which he admitted later in the court. He also agreed to to return 25 million pesos ($510,000) to the government, his alleged share of the tax cut. However, a co-accused in a case of plunder, an offense that carries a life term in jail, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of bribery at the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan.   • After former president Joseph Estrada was impeached in 2001, Atong flew to the U.S. where he was caught and arrested by U.S. authorities while gambling in Las Vegas. He was placed under house arrest and then extradited to the Philippines in 2006.
  • Atong is also known for promoting the cockfighting industry in the Philippines. He co-founded the Ultimate Fighting Cock Championship(UFCC) and helps finance cockfighting teams by sending them to competitions.
