  • During the 2026 Iraqi presidential election, Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) nominated Fuad Hussein for the presidential position. The decision was against the prior agreements between KDP and PUK, the two ruling Kurdish parties in Iraq.
  • They earlier agreed on the rule that the federal presidency would be managed by KDP, and PUK will manage the presidency of Kurdistan Region.
  • The conflict postponed the presidential elections and its sessions in the parliament in December 2025 and February 2026, which also postponed the appointment of a new prime minister as the president of Iraq has a power to nominate a prime minister in Iraq.
  • On 11 April 2026, the Council of Representatives chose Nizar Amidi as the President of Iraq. He received 227 votes in the second round of voting. One of his opponents, Muthanna Amin Nader, of the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) received 15 votes.
  • In these elections, he defeated his another opponent, Fuad Hussein, the Foreign Minister of Iraq and a supporter of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
  • After being appointed as the president of Iraq, he said in a media talk that he would follow the “Iraq First” principles during work. He also criticised the Israeli-U.S. attacks in some areas of Iraq during their war with Iran. He supported peace efforts.
