Some Lesser Known Facts About Rahul Singh

• Rahul Singh was born ans raised in Vaishali, Bihar.

• He is an 1996-batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer of the Bihar Cadre. Before joining civil service, Singh worked as an engineer.

• After completing his initial training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoories, Rahul was appointed as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Chaibasa (West Singhbhum), Bihar.

• In 2000, he was appointea as Joint Secretary, Agriculture Department, Bihar , where he worked on agriculture-related policies and programs of Bihar.

• In 2001, he held the additional charge of Managing Director, Bihar State Seed Corporation.

• In 2003, Singh was appointed as the District Magistrate of Nalanda districr, where he handled governance and development realated responsibilities.

• In 2006, he was appointed as the District Magistrate of Bhagalpur.

• In 2008, he was appointed as Municipal Commissioner of Patna, where he handled urban administrative and civic infrastrusture projects of urban Patna

• In 2009, he served as District Magistrate and Deputy Secretary of Bhagalpur in Land Revenue and Management departments. In 2011, he was promoted to District Collector.

• In 2011 Singh served as Tranport Commissioner of Bihar, where he handled transport administration and regulatory matters of the state. In the same year, he was appointed as the Director of Mid-Day Meal Program in Patna.

• In 2012, Rahul was appointed as Project Director of Bihar Education Mission Authority, where he played a key role in implementing school education programs.

• In 2014, he was appointed as Managing Director of Bihar’s energy sector and worked on power and electricity-based administration. He served the department till 2020.

• In November 2020, Singh moved to central government and appointed as Joint Secretary-Level Officer in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), where he worked with the G20 and Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) related administration.

• In August 2022, Rahul was promoted to Additional Secretary post with in DoPT.

• On 26 March 2024, Rahul was appointed as the Chaiurman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

• Under the leadership of Rahul, CBSE incoporated multilingual education, mother-tongue learning, and skill-based education along with normal education system.

• In August 2025, government of India extended Singh’s CBSE tenure until November 2027

• In May 2026, Rahul Singh came into news after a complaint was lodged reagrading CBSE’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, where students alleged that answer sheets mismatched, evaluation errors, and technical issues.

• On 2 June 2026, central governemnt ordered an inquiry about CBSE’s OSM services introduced during Rahul’s tenure.

• On the same day, he was tranferred from the post of CBSE’s chairman and was appointed as Additional Secretary of Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India.
